SYNOPSIS
NAZIROCK
A feature-documentary by Claudio Lazzaro
The extreme right seen from the inside: its music, its leaders, its alliances,
its rites, and the political acceptance that is opening the Italian Nazi-fascists
the doors to institutionalized power.
But why are they being accepted and recognized? Because in Italy the
radical right wing accounts for 500,000 votes that play a key role within
the Italian election system, where 25,000 votes can make the difference
and decide who is going to govern the Country.
NAZIROCK tells the story of
this political transition using the “skin”, “oi”, “white
power” and “punkadestra” musical bands who sing fascists
songs as a main theme.
The film opens and closes
on the images of the demonstration attended by the famous “2 million supporters” summoned by the ex premier
Silvio Berlusconi and that took place on December 2nd, in Rome (on the
speaker’s podium, together with Berlusconi, you will also see Luca
Romagnoli and Alessandra Mussolini, the main leaders of the neo-Fascist
coalition). But what counts more is that the film will also take you to
a kind of Nashville of the estreme right: a big event, organized by Forza
Nuova, the political movement whose leader is Roberto Fiore (sentenced
to nine years for forming an armed band) that took place from September
29th to October 1st, in Viterbo, Latium, with the participation of several
leading rock bands, activists and political leaders coming from Spain,
Germany, France, Greece, Lebanon and Romania.
During that event, called “Campo d’Azione 2006”, souvenir
stands sold badges showing the face of Hitler to be sewn onto sweaters
as well as books denying the existence of the Holocaust, like the one written
by Carlo Mattogno and entitled “Auschwitz: fine di una leggenda” (Auschwitz,
the end of a legend). Until very late at night, in the large hangar that
during the day was animated by speeches and discussions, we assisted to
a very disquieting show featuring several rock bands frantically acclaimed
by a crowd performing the nazi-fascist stiff-arm salute and sporting a
huge banner, printed for the occasion and stating in large capital letters: “MORE
NAZISM FOR US ALL”.
One of the most acclaimed speakers in Viterbo was Luigi Ciavardini, sentenced
to 30 years for the Bologna slaughter and who, ten days after participating
in the Viterbo’s event, was arrested for a hold-up. Another very
passionate speech was delivered by Andrea Insabato sentenced to 12 years – reduced
afterwards to 6 - for a bomb attack against the headquarters of the daily “Manifesto”.
These images are accompanied by the music of the rock band Hobbit, chanting
an hallucinated hymn to violence anticipating and almost calling for the
bloody clashes that took place in Catania football stadium where the Police
Inspector Filippo Raciti lost his life.
Resorting to a fragmented editing alternating nazi rock songs and archival
footage reminding us of the horrors and destructions brought about by an
ideology that caused only death and shame, and through the interviews with
some of the young people attending the event, we tried to depict this right-wing
Nashville.
A nightmare that leaves us speechless and on the hop, because the question
is always the same: “How is it possible history did not teach us
nothing?”
NAZIROCK

Nazirock is his second
documentary.
Camicie Verdi,
a journey in the Lega Nord, has been his first stint behind the
camera and it also marked his debut as producer, sound engineer
etc. In fact, in the making of his first and second documentaries,
he followed not only the reporting part but he was also obliged
to research low cost technologies, choose the most appropriate
equipment, learn how to use them and mostly carry them around (and
they are very heavy when your crew consists of two people only!).
The documentary about Lega Nord, distributed by Mikado two months
before the vote on Devolution, has been screened on several occasions
both in the North and in the South sparking a passionate pre-election
debate everywhere.

In 2006, the documentary was awarded the Independent Critics’ Award
of the Locarno Film Festival with the mention “The Most Significant
Socially Committed Film”. Afterwards, the DVD version was
sold together with the daily “L’Unità”.
Camice Verdi has been recently aired by the satellite channel RAI
Sat Cinema on prime time.
In april 2008 the DVD of Nazirock will be distributed in the
prestigious collection Feltrinelli Real Cinema
Claudio Lazzaro has been a written press journalist for thirty
years, with the exception of some occasional stints on television
where he worked for Rai and Mediaset as a writer or host, as well
as some experiences as screenwriter for cinema.
He began his career at “Europeo”, at a time when
the magazine was mostly famous for its great reportages. In the
last ten years, he has been working at “Corriere della Sera”,
where he followed in particular news items as well as foreign affairs
(he has been a war correspondent both in Kossovo and Irak).
Two years ago he left Corriere and founded his own company, Nobu
Productions, whose objective is to make low cost documentaries,
exploiting the new technologies and the new distribution channels:
satellite TV, DVDs, the Internet.
“The name of the company is not meant as a tribute to the
famous Japanese cook Nobu Matsushita. Nobu is the short for no
budget, that means We have no money but we will make the film,
anyhow. My idea is that instead of complaining for the lack of
a real kind of information, and for the pre-packed news that are
provided to us by TVs, we should invest in something new and totally
different and try to do what is apparently impossible.”
The question is: “Why a low cost product, a no budget product,
should find a place on this overgrown market?” The answer
could be the following: “May be, and this is the real challenge,
because the market should favor those who taking some risks provide
the audience with something that neither television nor cinema – that
in many cases is trying to mimic television – are capable
of offering. If a product dares to be different, if it does not
go through censorship or the hoops of the Italian media system,
may be, in the end it could actually find some space on the market.
Pursuing this almost absurd hope, Camicie Verdi has been the first
successful attempt. As far as Nazirock is concerned, let’s
cross our fingers.”
CLAUDIO LAZZARO - BIOGRAPHIE EN FRANCAIS

et du service étranger (envoyé de guerre au Kossovo
et Iraq).
